Caution Yellow card
Challenge Blocking or impeding an opposing player who is in possession of the ball in order to deny him/her a rushing or passing opportunity.
Cross A long pass,  usually diagonally up-field,  into the centre of the field from a wing.  Also called "centre" (i.e. to "centre the ball").
Crossover When a player running without the ball crosses the path of a teammate,  carrying the ball (aka "scissors") often to confuse opposing defenders.
Direct Free-kick Free kick from which a goal may be scored without first touching another player.

Dribbling Close, skillful handling of the ball with the feet especially when seeking to beat a defender.  
Drop-ball Method of re-starting play after injury stops play or the play is stopped without the ball going out-of-bounds,  by which the Referee drops the ball between two opposing players at the point where the play stopped.
End-line The line running from side to side at the end of the field,  on which the goal line is located.
Free-kick Awarded after a player has fouled an opponent as per the Rules of Soccer.  May be Direct or Indirect.
Fullback Defender
Goal-kick Kick taken by the defending team from inside the penalty area after the ball has crossed their end-line, having last been touched by an opposing player.
Give-and-Go When a player makes a short pass to a teammate and immediately runs ahead,  looking for a quick return pass (aka "push and run").  A co-operative method of passing an opposing player on the run.
Halfback Midfielder (with defensive and offensive functions)
Hand-ball When a player other than the goalkeeper (unless outside his penalty area) intentionally touches the ball with his arm or hand.
Head To propel or re-direct the ball with one's head.
Indirect Free-kick Free kick from which a goal may not be scored without first touching another player.
"Man-on" Warning to a teammate who is in possession of the ball that an opposing player is closing on him/her (usually from outside of his/her line of vision).
Mark To cover a specific opposing player closely to prevent him/her from receiving the ball (particularly in the defensive goal area).
Match A traditional name for a game (i.e. a "matching" of skill).
Offside When a player is nearer to the opposing goal than at least one of the opposing players (other than the goalkeeper) at the moment the ball is played unless he is in his own half of the field of play.
Penalty area Box in front of the goal in which the goalkeeper is allowed to touch the ball with the hands.
Penalty-kick A Free-kick taken in the penalty area after a foul is incurred in the Penalty Area.  Only the goalkeeper, standing on his goal line, may defend against this kick, taken from the Penalty spot just beyond the outside of the Penalty area.
Send A long kick up the middle of the field in hope of creating a breakout opportunity for rushing forwards.
Red card A card a Referee awards to a player for violent action on the field as specified in the Rules of Soccer which carries an immediate ejection from the game.  Two yellow cards equals a Red card.
Side A traditional name for a team.
Striker Centre-forward player whose primary responsibility to to capitalize on goal-scoring opportunities.
Sweeper A single defender (fullback) who is positioned behind the play in order to cover the full width of the field against breakouts (last line of defense).
Tackle A challenge,  using the foot,  to win the ball from an opponent.
Touch Line A sideline of the field.
Throw-in Taken by the opposing team when a player is last to touch the ball before it crosses a sideline from the point where it has crossed.
Trap When a player receives the ball with the foot, thigh, chest or head (also called "cushioning").
Volley Kicking the ball with the foot when it is still in the air.
Wall A shoulder-to-shoulder line of players in front of the their own goal, forming a human barrier against a free kick.
Yellow Card A "caution" to a player for misconducts as specified in the Rules of Soccer.  Two yellow cards equals a Red card.
